To the Silence Breakers

As I was driving to work this morning, I heard on the news that Time magazine announced its Person of the Year: The Silence Breakers. No explanation needed, I started to cry and I couldn’t immediately place why.

Then it hit me.

This one’s for you. This one’s for us.

The long silenced women who have been harassed, insulted, assaulted, raped and violated in a myriad of ways by men, and by a society at large who tells us, “that’s just the way it is.”

Not any longer.

The silence was deafening because the world pretended to be deaf to us.

But we changed that. We kept talking. We refused to be silenced, again and again until finally something broke in our collective society.

They pretended to be surprised (maybe they were), they said they couldn’t believe how many of us it had happened to.

We knew. We weren’t surprised. We have long stood in injured solidarity together, trying to heal and keep each other safe. warning each other about dangerous men, and as birthing people, of dangerous providers.

We spoke against our traumas and put words to our pain and shame, and if no one else would listen, we spoke it to each other.

They’re listening now. Continue to use your voice. You may find that it’s rusty from lack of use or shaky from fear. Use it anyway. What you say, what you do, what’s been said and done has always mattered, but now they’re listening.

This one’s for you. This one’s for us.

The Silence Breakers.

Hear us roar.
